Abstract:
The present study aimed to investigate how animating photos and still drawings of people who have long passed (i.e., the famous historical figures, such as country leaders, poets, etc.) and making them talk affect viewers perception of the message being delivered. We hypothesize that breathing life into still images will create a sense of community between a person depicted on them and a viewer and thus make viewers take what that person says closer to heart. Thus, the speaking avatars could create an illusion of reality and raise trust in whatever the avatar says among the audience. The present study discusses the underlying mechanisms of this effect and reflects on the possible areas of applications. The potential benefits (emotional treatment) and risks (deceit and misinformation) of the technology are highlighted.
