Abstract:
We document medical end-of-life decisions concerning cancer patients. Physicians that made the decision to end the life of a cancer patient answered a questionnaire regarding their end-of-life decisions. It encompasses decisions regarding the withdrawal or withholding of potentially life-prolonging medical treatments, intensifying measures to alleviate pain or other symptoms with hastening of death as a potential side effect, and administration, supply or prescription of drugs with an explicit intention to hasten death. It turns out that physicians often fail to communicate the potentially life-shortening effects of treatment decisions (passive euthanasia).
