Abstract:
This chapter demonstrates how instructors can use literary works to explore the complex interaction of individuality and cultural requirements. It shows how literature can be used to increase intercultural competence through the lens of the face/honor/dignity analysis of culture and the Culture ? Person ? Situation (CuPS) approach. By showing students how to use this approach to analyze works from honor, face, and dignity cultures, instructors can highlight the essential balancing act each individual and culture must perform in intercultural communication. Unlike other approaches to cultural origins, the tripartite division is based on the multifaceted interaction of geography, resources, and population. By using literature to analyze how these three factors shape cultures, instructors can help students learn to predict how characters in literary works might or should react. Then, as the actual actions of characters are revealed, we can distinguish what was truly the character’s and what was cultural behavior. The chapter will provide examples for instructors to use from world literature.
