Abstract:
Queer psychiatrists spend a lot of time thinking about how they present. In professional settings, they often mask their authentic selves to have passing privilege based on their choice of clothing, tone of voice, and mannerisms. In most of medical and psychiatric training, self-disclosure can be viewed as disruptive or even damaging to the therapeutic relationship with teen patients, but how true this assumption is? This paper aims to determine whether it is beneficial or not for queer psychiatrists to present as queer in front of their patients. We also discuss strategies that a queer psychiatrist can use to delf-disclose, the implications of implicit and explicit self-disclosures, and situations where self-disclosure may be harmful.
