Abstract:
Examining physically healthy participants with and without a history of childhood trauma,we investigated whether there is a connection between a history of adverse experiences during childhood and the feeling of pleasure from opioid use. Participants were given either an intramuscular active dose of opioid (0.15 mg/kg) or a very low dose control (0.01 mg/kg) to determine their physical pain threshold and tolerance pre- and post-drug administration. Childhood trauma was reported to sensitise individuals to the pleasurable and motivational effects of opioids and reduce sensitivity to the negative effects.
