Abstract:
The second decade of cinema in China has provided a wide range of sources for biographical films of growing up, dedicated to filmmakers who were born in the 70s of the last century. This highly popular movement reimagines many aspects of the growing up cinema genre and offers an unusual narrative for the sociocultural changes that have taken place in China during the turn of the millennium. This phenomenon is called the millennium narrative (qingchun pian) and provides a wide range of material for understanding the discourse of cinema and music in the era before the advent of digital media. The study demonstrates how self-awareness of the roots and origins of intertextuality and the heterogeneous landscape of modern digital media occurs in contemporary cinema.
