Abstract:
This research examines a selection of challenging crossover picturebooks from a cross-cultural as well as from a cross-temporal perspective. The authors and illustrators of these books are from very diverse cultures across the globe but they all draw their inspiration from the art and culture of tribal or traditional societies that have existed for centuries or even millenia. Although these picturebooks have their origins in very diverse cultures from different continents and time periods, they share a number of common themes, notably respect for nature, preservation of a traditional way of life, the sense of family and community, and the cross-generational sharing of stories. They transmit a cultural heritage that is part of an ancient but living tradition passed on from generation to generation. They do so by pushing at the boundaries of the picturebook, experimenting with the word-picture relationship, challenging form and content.
