Abstract:
Globalisation and the indisputable dominance of English as a global language has impelled its adaptation as a medium of instruction (EMI) at higher education institutions of a growing number of non-English-speaking countries. English-only teaching has been the basis of many higher education programmes. This trend has led lecturers to reduce or abolish student use of their mother tongue (L1) in the classroom. Translanguaging can be defined as providing opportunities for students to use their entire linguistic repertoire for coping with learning in a less proficient language. This study examines translanguaging practices in universities. Data were collected using semi-structured interviews and lesson observations. Qualitative data were analyzed via inductive content analysis. The findings showed that the lecturers held a positive perspective towards translanguaging and they used translanguaging mostly for instructional and affective purposes.
