Abstract:
The motion and turbulent wake characteristics of underwater vehicles in a stratified fluid are of great importance and are not yet fully understood. This work proposes a methodology to predict density-stratified flows and wakes past a sphere. Two kinds of simulation are performed in both nonstratified and stratified conditions. The drag force, turbulent wakes, and density fluctuations, as well as coherent vortex structures, are analyzed to assess the influences of the stratification. Results show that internal waves are generated by the presence of the sphere in a stratified fluid, which causes an increase of resistance. The vertical motion and vortices are suppressed as a result of the stratification in the vertical direction, compared to that in the horizontal direction.
