Abstract:
This article analyzes a study of strategists who actively initiated, developed and maintained an online community dedicated to ongoing engagement on issues of strategic importance to Ericsson. The results show that organizing such collective action transforms professional strategists from expert planners and analysts into managers who centralize responsibility for decisions that affect (a) the permeability of community boundaries for different types of community members; b) incentive mechanisms that mobilize participation and encourage knowledge sharing across hierarchies; and c) build the strategic content needed to integrate disparate inputs, often less linked to the strategic frameworks of senior managers, into effective strategic initiatives.
