Abstract:
The article explores what factors encourage digital platform firms to set or change their boundaries. It is proposed that digital platforms make strategic decisions across three different types of interrelated boundaries: (1) the scope of the platform firm (what assets are owned, what workforce is used, and what activities are carried out by the firm), (2) the configuration and composition of the platform sides (which individual groups of customers have access to the platform) and (3) digital interfaces (which define the two-way communication between the platform and each of its parties).
