Abstract:
The article examines the issue using a competition-based conflict model, supplemented by multiple production sectors and social identification. The results show that as society modernizes, it moves towards an equilibrium with a universal national identity, low levels of conflict and high productivity, if national pride is high, ethnic differences are not expressed in peoples minds, resources are scarce, or institutions are of good quality.
