Abstract:
This article explores how soft-commitment devices that limit the use of the phone, Facebook, and Instagram affect measures of self-control in spending time on social networks. The results show that people: (i) spend more time on their phones and Facebook than they realize and say they want to; and (ii) significantly reduce usage following the adoption of these restrictions.
