Abstract:
The Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) project eliminates incompatibilities between the domestic payment systems of European countries. The results show that the structure of transactions plays an important role in the impact of SEPA on competition between banks; Competition is less intense in post-SEPA when the transaction scheme is oriented towards the domestic market. Moreover, a comparison of pre-SEPA and post-SEPA phases shows that SEPA increases competition when economies of scale are large enough.
