Abstract:
The purpose of this article is to explore the motives and basis of the business model used by the urban poor to create micro-enterprises in the informal sector. In contrast to the notion that womens informal sector microentrepreneurship is the result of involuntary exclusion or poverty, this paper found that womens motivations are the result of a wide range of factors, including additional family income, gaining social recognition, and a host of others reasons.
