Abstract:
The article analyzes how the pay program in India mediates the impact of income surges on domestic violence. Using the phased roll-out of MGNREGS, a difference-in-differences strategy was applied to show that the implementation of MGNREGS mitigated the impact of adverse storm shocks on reported domestic violence crimes at the district level by 8 to 22 percent. Using additional household data from the Human Development Survey, the mediating effects of MGNREGS on storm shocks and the possible empowerment of women were investigated.
