Abstract:
The article analyzes the behavior of employees (N = 284) hired to complete a task online. In manual reporting (MR), employees may overestimate the number of hours worked. In Automatic Reporting (AR), hours were counted automatically, making fraud impossible. The results show that even with the opportunity to cheat, online workers report that their hours worked honestly, and the ability for fraudsters to choose an environment conducive to cheating may not always lead to increased dishonesty in organizations.
