Abstract:
The article explores the overall impact of global value chains (GVCs) on wages and labor demand. The results show that relative position in the GVC is negatively correlated with wages and employment, and that the effect of GVC participation depends on whether forward or backward linkages are accounted for. Heterogeneity was found both across countries (middle and high income) and across sectors (manufacturing versus services).
