Abstract:
This study analyzed pop-up camera imagery to quantify patterns in the diversity and abundance of benthic fauna in reef and mixed substratum habitats that are closed and remain open to bottom-hauled fisheries. Coarse sediments in areas closed to towed bottom gear supported more sedentary, upright, slow-growing species (eg, pink sea fans, pink corals, branching sponges) than those present in areas still heavily towed. Coarse sediments exposed to towed bottom gear contain more mobile, garbage-collecting or opportunistic species.
