Abstract:
The article explored whether a strict fisheries management measure to close the fishery to replenish juveniles (glass eels) could lead to the restoration of the local Japanese eel population. The study was conducted in the Kojima-Bei-Asahi River System, Okayama Prefecture, Japan, as the prefecture has not allowed commercial fishing for glass eel since 20XX, providing a unique opportunity to conduct a quasi-experimental assessment of the impact of the glass eel moratorium on fisheries. The results indicate that the growth phase of Japanese eel (yellow eel) abundance in this aquatic system has not increased or may have even decreased since the commercial glass eel fishery in the area has been closed.
