Abstract:
The article analyzes the impact of the transition to renewable energy sources on world politics. The analysis shows that renewables cannot replace many of the services that fossil fuels provide to the economy and the military. It is argued that if the irreplaceability hypothesis is correct, then a fully decarbonized global political economy will require a “Great Transformation” or structural transformation of the political, economic and military foundations of the world order.
