Abstract:
The article provides a quantitative assessment of the growth in welfare from reducing the costs of international and domestic trade, when the countrys interior regions gain access to international markets through coastal ports. Improving inland transport infrastructure reduces trade costs between inland regions and international markets without affecting the international trade costs of coastal regions. This asymmetric reduction in the costs of international trade improves the access of domestic regions to world markets and increases their prosperity by reducing trade costs.
