Abstract:
The article analyzes a two-criteria fleet deployment model that minimizes transport costs and travel time under environmental constraints. The model determines the Pareto optimal frontier of costs, transit times and CO2 emissions in terms of total costs for the importer, as well as the impact of possible delays. The numerical results show a convex operating cost curve as a function of time savings. However, given the correlation between slow steaming and reduced production costs, the results for emission controls show that the impact is primarily on shippers in terms of longer lead times, rather than liners that benefit from lower costs.
