Abstract:
The article explores the concept of Harold Hotelling in mathematical economics. Based on the analysis of the scientists mathematical theory, the role of Hotelling in the history of mathematical economics is revealed. Using published as well as archival material, he traces Hotellings route in mathematical economics, observes Hotelling through mathematics, and scrutinizes Hotellings methodological writings in order to grasp the meaning of his models and concepts, in particular his concept of utility as a monetary surplus.
