Abstract:
The article examines the influence of heritage and the mechanisms of transmission of historical conflicts on modern trade. Based on new data on the regional distribution of civilian deaths as a result of massacres during the Sino-Japanese War (1931-1945), it is found that the intensity of local conflict predicts the structure of international trade of Chinese corporations three generations later. The mechanism of transmission of the collective memory of the war has also been investigated. The results show that the trade-inhibiting effect increases over time as we are confronted with the collective memory of war.
