Abstract:
The article analyzes new hidden forms of suppression and self-censorship in relation to the role of scientists as public experts. The research methodology is based on two Internet surveys conducted among Finnish researchers in 20XX and 20XX. We focus on the open-ended questions in these surveys, where respondents reflect on the issues of freedom of expression and the feedback they receive in public arenas. The results show a distinction between four forms of repression: political and economic control, organizational control, control between competing scholars, and public control.
