Abstract:
I was a child when I found out that people reclaim slurs. I could not understand it at first; I questioned why anyone would want to use words that had caused them so much pain? Thus began my fascination with humans who reconstruct painful memories and words into language and art. Words like fat, overweight, and morbidly obese wormed their way onto my body, wedging just beneath the skin. Almost impossible to penetrate and remove, they cause/d great pain. Despite confusion, the question of reclamation planted a seed of fascination for creating power from disgust and pain. It is with this fascination that I enter the Fatties Project. Choosing to create something from the hurt and disgust, The Fatties Project is a visual-based art project that utilizes mixed media to speak back to fatphobia. I make fat silhouettes out of the pages of diet cookbooks and use the images of food to make beautiful round bodies. The aim of The Fatties Project is to reconfigure the culture of disgust of fatness into something powerful. These pieces of art are meant to be hung on a wall where you can see fatness as empowering, even as it is mixed with pain. It is not my intention to erase the pain of fatphobia. Instead, it is my desire to create more pleasure and possibility in softness. The piece in this forum, titled “Future Fatty,” is turning her back on all of the different regulations placed on her body and turning towards possibilities. The information remains, but she is beyond their control (Figure 1).
