Abstract:
So far, practices of classification, comparison, evaluation, and quantification have been studied in separate research fields. In contrast to this research practice, the special issue of the Kölner Zeitschrift für Soziologie und Sozialpsychologie brings their connections to the fore. The case studies collected in this special issue demonstrate the insights one gains by investigating how these four practices interrelate. The contributions deal with different formats of observation and cover a broad thematic spectrum: colonial statistics and early forms of comparing and grading states, inter/national statistics, monitoring systems, rankings and digital technologies such as recommender systems, digital platforms, and predictive algorithms. In the introductory article, I outline the theoretical framework of this issue and show how the contributions are connected.
