Abstract:
This research is a first of its kind, as it brings together two fields that are rarely considered jointly; namely, visual literacy studies and gender studies. The article examines ways in which acquired visual literacy skills can contribute to gender sensitivity in society and enhance understandings of visual representations of gender. The research of these skills has become increasingly important due to the ever-growing complexity of visual manifestations in the era of mass media and following new technologies, such as virtual and augmented reality, alongside more traditional representations that human culture has produced for centuries. The articles offer ways by which visual literacy, as an analytic research approach, can contribute to the articulation of visual representations of identities and promote a skilful deciphering of visual constructions of peoples identities from various genders and social backgrounds.
