Abstract:
This research demonstrates how instructors can use literary works, fables, short stories, memoirs, and legends to explore the complex interaction of individuality and cultural requirements. More importantly, it shows how literature can be used to increase intercultural competence through the lens of the face/honor/dignity analysis of culture. By showing students how to use this approach to analyze works from honor, face, and dignity cultures, instructors can highlight the essential balancing act each individual and culture must perform and learn in intercultural communication. The tripartite division of honor, face, and dignity is based on the multifaceted interaction of geography, resources, and population. By using literature to analyze how these three factors shape cultures, instructors can help students learn to predict how characters in literary works might or should react. As students gain experience through literary examples, they will be able to transfer this skill to real-life interactions.
