Abstract:
This article examines (i) the implications of the COVID-19 outbreak and subsequent government policies, and (ii) their firm-level determinants in the context of Asia Pacific financial markets. The results show that the declaration of the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic has had a significant negative impact on stock returns, with few exceptions. The results also show that while government stimulus packages have somewhat calmed the markets, these policies have generally failed to restore investor confidence.
