Abstract:
The article explores how the railways have brought about change and divergence of local populations in England and Wales as they have undergone dramatic urbanization. The study is based on early data on railway stations, population and occupational structure in more than 9000 localities. The results show that the presence of a railway station in the locality by 1851 led to a significant increase in population growth from 1851 to 1891 and displaced the male occupational structure from agriculture. Moreover, the presence of stations increased population growth to a greater extent if the settlements had a higher initial population density, and for those 3–15 km from the stations, they had less growth in comparison with settlements farther from the stations.
