Abstract:
The article analyzes the China-Europe Freight Train (CEFT), which has created a large geographic coverage and had a major impact on the transport landscape encompassing China, Central Asia and Europe. This article argues that the new state of logistics in China at the local level is driving and supporting CEFT from below in comparison to national government and market forces. Using the ancient city of Xian as the quintessential embodiment of the state of logistics, this article demonstrates how state-run logistics CEFT has increased the number of routes and redirected trade flows between China and Europe, and reorganized long-distance and cross-border production and supply.
